Grow your own herbs

Grow Your Own Herbs

Herbs have traditionally been used for millennia by most ancient civilisations. Their medicinal properties have been well documents, as have many other uses ranging from poisoning opponents, to getting “high” and inducing sleep as well as making lotions and potions to pamper even then. These days many of us need reminding that we need to stay close to nature and appreciate more, what our ancestors have long known, researched and tested. In an age, where apothecaries rarely exist anymore and the health sector is dominated by pharmaceutical companies many people want to go back to basics and live a more natural, holistic life.

When you search our website you will find plenty of information on how to grow your own herbs, whether you have a big garden and a green house and the green fingers to boot, or whether you just want to be able to grow a little something on your kitchen windowsill. They don’t really need that much looking after, and you can get the kids involved in growing simple herbs in little dishes in your kitchen. As they grow virtually everywhere, some of them, such as rosemary and lavender, are actually quite hardy, attract insects and look pretty too, you don’t need to splash out on much equipment or a greenhouse. Most of them do well and look good in a pot too. You could have your patio filled with lovely pots containing fragrant herbs for you to use in your kitchen to create your favourite dish, to make your own “smellies” such as soaps or infuse them to make gorgeous oils and vinegars, as well as delicious herbal teas.

Those of us, who like to keep our caffeine consumption down, know for instance the satisfaction a nice cup of herbal tea, with a little honey perhaps, can bring. Whether you want to be refreshed with fennel, be soothed with chamomile, or deal with an upset stomach using some peppermint tea, there are a lot of varieties of different herbal teas to be had ranging from pre-mixed detox or energising blends to yogi, ginseng or roibos teas as well as a whole lot of other lovely infusions, all caffeine free and completely natural – if you grow your own herbs, you can make all of those yourself!

If your hobby is cooking, then you will appreciate the immense satisfaction growing your own herbs and then using them to flavour all your favourite dishes brings. They are easy to store, once you have harvested them, too. You can put small quantities in boxes or bags and put them into the freezer or you can dry them. And it’s not difficult to buy the seeds, or even the plants, if you don’t want to grow from seeds. You can purchase from many suppliers over the internet, or you can simply nip down to your local garden centre. There is also a growing market in both organic plants and organic seeds, so you can create an all organic dish, tea infusion or bath oil, if that is your preference.
