Hypnotherapy
Hypnotherapy
Hypnosis has been around for a long time as a form of therapy. Don’t be put off by the word hypnosis, which we all too often associate with some sort of magic, where people on stage are hypnotised into doing things they would not normally do, and then being unable to remember anything about it. Hypnotherapy has nothing to do with entertainment or magic. Hypnosis derives from the Greek word for sleep, and hypnotherapy was originally called neuro-hypnosis – sleep of the nervous system - by the Scottish surgeon James Braid in 1841.
Unlike the hypnosis you witness on stage, where the stage hypnotist claims to control the hypnotised person, a hypnotherapist gives the control to his/her clients, in order to create an environment, where the client can access their inner resources in their own individual way. Hypnotherapy is therapeutic relaxation, using suggestion. Why does it work? It works, because in that relaxed state you are closer to your subconscious mind and are able to access it, which you cannot do, when you are not deeply relaxed. So it can be a powerful tool to assist you to achieve your goal, such as stop smoking, overcome a fear of flying etc.
In hypnotherapy, unlike in many other therapies, the therapist focuses on the role of subconscious behaviour and influences on a client’s life. So it is often sought by people, who want to change their habits and attitudes, as well as deal with anxiety, stress or depression. It is also often used for pain management and the treatment of insomnia. Another huge area, where hypnotherapy has proven to be a successful treatment is that of psychosomatic illness, such as tension headaches, migraines, asthma or IBS. Hypnotherapy can furthermore help significantly with weight loss. It is also used medically in pregnancy to prepare the woman for the birth and during the birth, in order to reduce anxiety, stress and pain. So, if you are looking for a medication free way to get help with any of the listed complaints, you might want to look into hypnotherapy as your alternative to modern medicine.
A well established branch of hypnotherapy is hypno-analysis, which has its roots in psychoanalysis (going back to Sigmund Freud and further). It uses your hypnosis, your deeply relaxed state, to regress you in age, reliving (and abreacting, as it is called in hypno-analysis) any traumatic memories, which you might not have dealt with at the time. This part of hypnotherapy has been used with incredible success in the treatment for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) with soldiers in the first World War and ever since. Hypnotherapists are trained people, and all reputable practitioners are registered. There are many useful directories you can search for through our website, which will give you further information about hypnotherapy and whether it is right for, as well as list registered hypnotherapists in your area. You never know, you might discover the tool, therapy you have been looking for, so why not give it a go.
Hypnotherapy is the therapy to choose if we have certain attitudes and/or behaviours that we would really like to change or modify. Some examples of this are to reduce anxiety, de-stress, stop smoking, lose weight, kick an addiction - in fact to help us to stop doing what we keep on doing when we would really rather not be doing it - if that makes sense!
If you feel that you could benefit from therapies of this kind, it is important to seek the help of a qualified hypnotherapist. Briefly, hypnotherapy is putting a person into a deep state of relaxation so that their awareness becomes keener and they are able to focus more specifically on certain suggestions. Hypnotherapy can also help with pain relief, phobias, pain management and personal development (self-esteem issues and confidence). Hypnotherapy is not going to make you do things that you don't want to do - it is to re-inforce your intention to do the things you DO want to do - but seem to be failing with! You always remain completely in control.
