Magical herbs

Magical Herbs

Herbs have traditionally been used for millennia by most ancient civilisations. Their medicinal properties have been well documents, as have many other uses ranging from poisoning opponents, to getting “high” and inducing sleep as well as making lotions and potions to pamper even then. These days many of us need reminding that we need to stay close to nature and appreciate more, what our ancestors have long known, researched and tested. In an age, where apothecaries rarely exist anymore and the health sector is dominated by pharmaceutical companies many people want to go back to basics and live a more natural, holistic life.

One of the uses of herbs, which has been around for just as long as culinary or medicinal uses of herbs is magic. Herbs have been used for alternative healing and witchcraft for as long as history has been recorded, and before then probably too, for magic spells and the occult and in pagan rituals in different cultures. Many herbs have symbolic associations and are believed to have great powers – they are used in meditation and spell casting for instance. Their prolific use in ancient South and North American cultures and tribes is well documented and many of the descendents of these cultures use herbs for the same purpose and practice magic to this day.

As herbs come from nature and earth, they are seen as a connection to bring about harmony with nature. There is plenty of neopagan witchcraft still around practicing magic in our modern world and using our most common culinary herbs and herbs used in aromatherapy and herbalism for magic spells and rituals. Most of our best known garden herbs, such as basil, rosemary or thyme are also used in magic. Magic herbs can be added to baths and incense to enhance your magical workings or heal the spirit, depending on what your desired outcome is – love, prosperity, wealth or relaxation. Choose cinnamon for the protection of your finances, angelica in spells to protect your home and for exorcism and energy, basil to attract love and wealth or chamomile to disperse curses or as a hand wash to ensure success in gambling. Some herbs are used for rituals and spell craft only and not for medicinal or other purposes. If you have not bought them in a shop as a food product, they can be toxic and should not be treated as food stuff.

Most people practicing magic know, that it is preferable to grow your own herbs, so you can interact with them best. If that is not possible for you, you will be able to purchase a wide selection of dried herbs in magic supply stores or in any health shop on the high street.
