Medicinal herbs

Medicinal Herbs

Herbs have traditionally been used for millennia by most ancient civilisations. Their medicinal properties have been well documents, as have many other uses ranging from poisoning opponents, to getting “high” and inducing sleep as well as making lotions and potions to pamper even then. These days many of us need reminding that we need to stay close to nature and appreciate more, what our ancestors have long known, researched and tested. In an age, where apothecaries rarely exist anymore and the health sector is dominated by pharmaceutical companies many people want to go back to basics and live a more natural, holistic life. These days herbs are most commonly used in Chinese herbal medicine as part of Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM).

When you search our website you will also find plenty of information to grow your own herbs, whether you have a big garden and a green house and the green fingers to boot, or whether you’d just be able to grow a little something on your kitchen windowsill. You can easily find information about seed and plant suppliers near you or on the internet. There are also workshops available, showing you, what to do with the herbs you have grown – how to make a nice lavender clothes freshener or how to use your herbs to make oils for instance or waxes, ointments, creams or even, of course, your own herbal teas. You might be surprised, what all those herbs you use in cooking could be good for. Of course you can also purchase readymade herbal supplements, such as starflower, evening primrose, golden seal and many others in your local health shop, if growing your own is a bit too alternative for you.

A huge area especially for those of us, who are interested in holistic therapies and alternative treatments, is naturopathy, which believes herbal remedies should be an integral part of modern health care. Naturopaths use herbs in true holistic fashion to treat the whole person and not just the disease or condition they might be seeking help for. Most herbal remedies used or recommended by naturopaths come in the form of tinctures as they are pure and do not contain any unnatural ingredients at all. Herbs such as black cohosh are often used for the treatment of PMS, to ease symptoms of the menopause or conditions such as neuralgia, whereas Echinacea, the most commonly used herbal remedy, is said to be good for cold and flu symptoms as well as boosting your immune system. The beauty of medicinal herbs is their simplicity, that they are natural (there are wide ranges of organic products available too) and can easily be bought, some even in major high street chemists.

So, whether you want to assist your digestion, ease IBS symptoms, lose weight, reduce allergies detox and cleanse, take natural anti-depressants, natural pain relief or you simply want to relax and unwind using aromatherapy oils - make sure, though, you research your herbs properly through the links given on most websites, as neither the herb selling websites not health shops will provide you with detailed information as to the exact health benefits of herbs due to tight legislative restrictions.
