Essential Oils

Essential Oils

We all have heard of essential oils, and many of us have them in the house and use them occasionally, or even regularly. If you have children you are bound to have some Tea Tree oil in your medicine cabinet, to put on cuts and grazes, or in the bath to treat eczema or for the unpleasant job of getting rid of head lice. Or you might simply be a fan of nice “smellies”, using your oil burner to diffuse a soothing lavender or an uplifting orange or lemon essential oil.

Essential oils are widely used in aromatherapy and in the cosmetics, pamper products and cleaning materials industry. Essential oils contain volatile aroma compounds from plants. They are also known as volatile oils, ethereal oils or aetherolea. They are called essential oils, because they are essential in that they carry a distinct scent or essence of the plant they are made from. The reason, why essential oils have been such a favourite for centuries is that they are pure, natural and unadulterated. Essential oils are extracted by distillation.

You can find essential oils being used in perfumes, but also in other cosmetics such as soaps, bath oils, foam baths or face and hand creams. We love a nice scent, as it sends feel good, mood enhancing messages to our brain, and depending on the oil we can feel relaxed, calmed or soothed with chamomile, lavender or the luxurious sandalwood, or we can feel refreshed with lemon or basil oils. Some essential oils have medical uses too for instance for the treatment of some skin conditions or even some cancers. Essential oils are even used in the flavouring of food or drink and in household cleaning products. You can buy your essential oils as carrier oils for massages, fragranced candles, bath and shower products, skin care, body oils or hair care products.

Whether we inhale essential oils with vapour to clear our noses and throats – and cleanse our skin pores as well at the same time, put a few drops of a scent we like or one that relaxes us in a bath, instantly moisturising our skin or get a collection of great healing and smelling essential oils for our oil burner, we are bound to benefit from the soothing or uplifting as may be effects the oils and their scents have on us and our stress levels. It is easily done and creates a bit of me time, especially, if you haven’t got a lot of time to spare.

A lot of the essential oils can be purchased in packs and boxes to make them a very special gift for a very special person, who is need of relaxation, pampering and a bit of luxury. Some companies offer gift vouchers, so if you are unsure, what fragrance your loved one would prefer you can still make it a perfect present. So, if you are looking for the perfect way to unwind and forget about the world for a few hours, essential oils might be the perfect solution for you. And a bath together or a relaxing massage could also put a bit of spice and romance back into the relationship.

Essential oils, used extensively in aromatherapyin health spas, hot tubs and during many kinds of body massage, are extracts that contain the substances that give plants their smell. They are produced by tiny glands in the petals, leaves, stems, bark and wood of many plants and trees. In nature, they are released slowly, but when heated or crushed, their oil glands burst, releasing the plant's aroma more strongly.
