Shiatsu Massage

Shiatsu Massage

Shiatsu massage is also known as a holistic bodywork. It is a traditional form of massage originating from Japan, but having been open to many influences from different forms of medicines and other cultures. There are two basic schools of Shiatsu massage: one is based on Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and acupuncture, and the other is based on western anatomical and physiological theory. It is one of those holistic treatments, which is constantly evolving, taking in new influences all the time. There are countless different styles incorporating the two main schools and traditional Japanese massage tradition and it depends on where you are and what style is on offer locally in your area or at the spa you chose to spend your pamper break at, what kind of Shiatsu massage you will end up with. Of course, if you are already well informed on the different styles, you might already have your favourite and search for centres offering just the one for you. Taken especially from elements of TCM there are a number of exciting styles, such as Zen Shiatsu or Meridian Shiatsu. What they all have in common is the oriental belief, that an imbalance of the Chi is the cause disease. So all styles of Shiatsu massage aim to restore the harmony of the Chi.

How does it work then? Well, it is basically acupuncture without the needles. The therapist will use the acupressure points, which are situated on your 12 meridians to correct any imbalances of the body and to maintain good health. This is achieved by the therapist applying slow and deep pressure on these acupressure points with fingers, thumbs, palms, elbows and knees. You might experience some pain. Whilst the treatment does not heal any disease itself, it unblocks the meridian points, where the Chi is blocked, causing problems.

In this day and age, where our lives are hectic and pressurised, where we struggle with constant media invasion and a severe lack of privacy and private time, we can lose sight of what is important in our lives, how to help and heal ourselves in order to lead a healthier life and achieve some degree of balance and spiritual enlightening, and so it is important to have some time out, away from it all. Shiatsu massage in all its forms and styles is very relaxing and calming. It can help reduce stress and muscular and joint problems, and it also improves flexibility and blood circulation in the body. It helps the release of toxins from your body and the balancing of the Chi. Shiatsu massage also increases our mental and spiritual awareness, and it can, therefore, help reduce anxiety.

Many oriental holistic therapy forms are concerned with the balance between the body and our spiritual wellbeing. A massage also ensures, that you can experience deep relaxation and the luxury of personal time, peace and space. Many spas offer great surroundings for you to get the most out of your holistic therapies and your Shiatsu massage in particular.

This is a finger pressure massage technique also known as acupressure (NOT to be confused with acupuncture - although it is based on the same Chinese meridian system).

Thumbs, fingers and palms are used by the therapist to apply pressure to various parts of your body that have been decided upon during the assessment prior to the commencement of the massage session.

The techniques used can involve tapping, rubbing, squeezing and applied pressure along meridians.
